What does it mean to be grateful? What does gratitude feel like and how can it be expressed through dance? These and many other questions are at the heart of the artistic project Murakoze - On Gratitude, which is being explored by the Cameroonian dancer Agathe Djokam Tamo, the Rwandan dancer Abdoul Mujyambere and the Ugandan dancer Robert Ssempijja - all graduates of the Ecole des Sables in Senegal.
In Murakoze, the dancers explore the meaning of gratitude from the perspective of their everyday artistic lives. They explore gratitude as an everyday gesture that can be experienced through dance as a means of expression for oneself and for a sustainable consciousness. The question of how gratitude can happen without the expectation of an answer leads the artists to a deeper examination of the origin and origins of movement - both in a physical and social context.
In addition to these existential and political questions, the concept of a new decolonial way of thinking is also addressed. The artists explore how dance and body movement can open up new perspectives and find new, creative forms of expression beyond the usual ways of thinking.
The three-week residency, the results of which will be presented in Murakoze, is the conclusion of the how to decolonize heimat project funded by the LWL Kulturstiftung. The event is also supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Dortmund.
