NEWS FROM HOME Chantal Akerman F/Belgium/BRD 1976 English OV 85'
Streets, store fronts, subways, night shots. The atmospheric New York cityscapes that Chantal Akerman put together in the mid-1970s in long, precisely framed shots are like moving still lifes. Cars roar past, trains rattle, horns honk and voices can be heard in the background. At times, a barely audible voice from off-screen makes its way through the urban soundscape: "My dear little daughter, I've just received your letter ..." It is Chantal Akerman herself, reading out a series of letters from her mother, who sometimes curiously, sometimes longingly, sometimes demanding, asks for news from her daughter in America and at the same time sends news from home in Brussels. The intimate lines collide not only acoustically with the lonely, rugged world of the big city. NEWS FROM HOME is an increasingly poignant reflection on closeness and distance, expectation and alienation.
