NOT AFRAID OF ART

Art is not dispensable, but what is art (in)separable from? How can art reflect and break up social power structures? In what ways do power and fear manifest themselves in art and who plays with these categories and the processes of becoming visible?

The exhibition Not Afraid of Art shows seven artistic positions that deal with the themes of power and fear in art. Anastasia Sosunova reassembles destroyed parts of the printing presses of a former underground publishing house with the printing plates of some anti-Soviet and religious books that were in circulation before 1990. With her bare hands, Kanitha Tith weaves steel wire into organic forms with loose ends, freeing herself from expectations of content or completion. Isaac Zavale's paintings tell the story of an assault in Johannesburg on a young man from the townships. Buket Isgören's works are characterized by the persistence and perseverance with which she conveys the images in her head. Žiga Sever opens his personal notebooks and shows how he overcame his fears of interacting with artists. Barış Doğrusöz's installation Interstices, a dizzying array of combinations will continue to be on view in the ADKDW studio. Two artistic positions will be presented as interventions outside the studio: Yussif Musah's mural at the RJM until 01 12 2024 and Isaac Zavale's works until 01 09 2024 in the showcases of the UNG-5.
