Strange things are happening in the city: letter theft is rampant. And now writer Frieda Fliege's only manuscript has disappeared without a trace. Frieda's book was due to go to print the next day. Her friend, Fridolino the donkey, sets off in search of the culprits. The amateur detective quickly tracks down the homeless man Diogenes, who begs for words rather than money in the city. But when the donkey follows him to his sleeping place on a garbage dump, he realizes that the man is only doing all this to save more letters for humanity. Apparently he was the first to notice that all the bookshops in the town have now closed and books have all but disappeared from public life. People hardly talk to each other anymore. This must be stopped...also in order to make Frieda's book really big after all. But how?
