Japan in the 14th century, at a time of never-ending wars and constant hunger: a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law live together in a bamboo hut surrounded by tall reeds. The son or husband is at war; in order to survive, the women kill passing soldiers and trade their equipment for a bit of rice from an unscrupulous trader. The unconditional will to live is also evident in the unstoppable passion with which the younger of the two women enters into a sexual relationship with a neighbor.
