Time is in upheaval and at the same time at a standstill: after reunification, a small town at the mouth of the River Elbe finds itself caught between fears of loss, uncertainty, idle factories, the burning gardens of Vietnamese contract workers and new hairstyles from the West. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Pilly is trying to find her way. Her mother is long gone and her father is more and more often at the local inn, her aunts are risking their livelihoods for the dream of the Golden West and Pilly longs for change and for Katja.
