From the field to the plate: What is regional food worth to us?

Whether eggs, vegetables or meat: most people in Baden-Württemberg generally prefer food from their region. In the supermarket, however, many change their minds and opt for cheaper alternatives. The advantages of regional products for consumers are obvious: quality, sustainability and freshness thanks to short distances. In return, producers, especially family businesses, need reliable partnerships and long-term purchase agreements in order to be able to plan economically. The state also promotes regional food with various programs. Nevertheless, there are many hurdles in practice: international competition, price wars and smaller production volumes can slow down the widespread marketing of regional food in supermarkets, for example. So what needs to change in order to increase regional added value and increase the production of high-quality food in the country? And how can we consumers improve the appreciation of our food and its producers?
