Together with the Kulturstiftung Schloss Britz, director Ruth Asralda presents the opera "Playing Trump", which deals with the phenomenon of populism using the example of Donald Trump shortly before the presidential election in the USA. The performance provides profound insights into populist rhetoric and can be interpreted as a collective incantation to avert evil.
The work by Austrian composer Bernhard Lang, commissioned by the Hamburg State Opera in 2020 and premiered in 2021, is based on a libretto by Dieter Sperl that uses original speech texts by Donald Trump. Mezzo-soprano Nadine Weissmann, known for her performances at the Bayreuth Festival, takes on the challenging task of bringing Trump's speeches to life on stage. His manipulative rhetoric is forcefully reinforced by Lang's musical language of loops and repeated phrases. Directed by Ruth Asralda, the opera becomes a visual and musical spectacle on the stage of the Großer Saal (Kulturstall).
