Robert Mapplethorpe: Behold the Lowly Vessel

While Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs of flowers are widely known, the role of objects, which often appear in his carefully constructed compositions, is less recognized. The vases and bowls in these still lifes, many of which came from the artist's own collection, demonstrate a deep appreciation of design - and reflect the assured eye and delight in classical forms expressed in Mapplethorpe's photographic work.

This connection forms the starting point for the exhibition "Behold the Lowly Vessel" at Galerie Thomas Schulte. The sensitive staging of Mapplethorpe's sensual, mostly black and white photographs with a collection of vases inspired by them takes a special approach. An approach that invites us to discover the intimate moments of exchange - a personal journey through Mapplethorpe's work and the great resonance it has found.
