Course instructor: Rita Lass (book and binding artist, binding restorer)
In this two-day course, book artist Rita Lass will give an insight into two graphic techniques that are ideal for contemporary colored papers and equally suitable for unique graphics. The motifs are built up in thin layers of color. Through partial overlapping, the transparent colors mix and only result in the final motif at the very end. Both techniques are tested in a playful approach to colors and shapes. The focus will primarily be on small formats in order to understand the basic principles, experiment and test out variations. The spectrum ranges from graphics with fascinating depth of color to dynamic surface design, painterly forms of expression or geometric patterns.
We will start with the reserve technique, where areas are covered with gum arabic while the remaining surface is inked with diluted printing ink. After washing out and drying, the process starts all over again. Layer by layer, the motifs are gradually created. During the drying times, there is room for the stencil wiping technique. Very fine color gradients are possible with this technique. The paint is distributed exclusively from the edge of the stencil, without necessarily filling the free areas in the stencils completely. If you work with wafer-thin layers of paint, there is virtually no drying time and you can place the stencils criss-cross on the format without running the risk of smudging the fresh paint.
It is also possible to opt for one of the techniques in order to delve deeper into the subject. No previous knowledge is required.
