In this course, book artist Rita Lass will give an insight into two graphic techniques used to create unique graphics. The motifs are built up in thin layers of paint. Through partial overlapping, the transparent colors mix and only at the very end do they result in the final motif. Both techniques are tested in a playful approach to colors and shapes. The focus will primarily be on small formats in order to understand the basic principles, to experiment and to be able to try out variations.

We will start with the reserve technique, where areas are covered with gum arabic while the remaining surface is inked with diluted printing ink. After washing out and drying, the process starts all over again. Layer by layer, the motifs are gradually created. During the drying times, there is room for the stencil wiping technique. Very fine color gradients are possible with this technique. The paint is spread exclusively from the edge of the stencil, without completely filling any open spaces in the stencils. If you work with wafer-thin layers of paint, there is virtually no drying time and you can place the stencils criss-cross on the format without running the risk of smudging the fresh paint.

It is also possible to choose one of the techniques in order to delve deeper into the subject. No previous knowledge is required.
