Summer Cinema Open Air, presented by the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival:
PERFECT DAYS
JPN/DEU 2023. dir: Wim Wenders. D: Kōji Yakusho, Arisa Nakano, Tokio Emoto. 125 min. JapOmdtU. FSK: 0
Hirayama is a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He carries out his work silently and devotedly. His daily routine is precisely structured, right down to listening to music and reading books. He takes photos of trees during his breaks. He seems perfectly content: he follows the rhythm of life between work and private rituals. Then his niece turns up.
Wim Wenders actually wanted to make a commissioned documentary about Tokyo's architecturally astonishing toilet blocks - which turned into this globally acclaimed feature film. This poetic and touching meditation on the beauty of everyday things and the infinitely winding paths of human life was screened in the IFFMH 2023 program between the Actor Award in Cannes and the Oscar nomination for Japan.
