A teacher from Tokyo goes on an excursion to a dune landscape to pursue his passion for insect research. When he misses the last bus, the villagers show him accommodation for the night with a widow in a small hut at the foot of the dune. The next morning, he realizes that he is trapped with her in a hollow in the middle of the sand, which has to be constantly shoveled away to avoid being buried under it. The fight against the masses of sand now determines his life. While he initially rebels and looks for ways out, he eventually accepts his fate and leaves his former identity behind. For this parable of human existence, Teshigahara finds congenial images of sand flowing everywhere and changing its shape in his film, which also made him famous in the West.
