The research-based artistic practice of Sung Tieu (* 1987, UN) addresses the irresolvable tensions between individual life realities and overarching mechanisms of systemic regulation. In particular, she reflects critically on German-German history. Her work, which moves between installation, sculpture, photography, drawing, text, video and sound, exposes the hidden structural logics that define social belonging and political existence. In doing so, Tieu deconstructs the categories of the legal and illegal, of inclusion and exclusion

With her work complex 1992, 2025, Tieu deepens her ongoing examination of the 1980 recruitment agreement between the GDR and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which resulted in the migration of around 60,000 Vietnamese contract workers to the GDR in the 1980s. While her previous exhibitions focused primarily on the living and working conditions of these workers until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, in this exhibition she focuses on the far-reaching effects of the collapse of the GDR. Tieu analyzes how the political and social upheavals as well as the racist structures and discrimination of that time influenced the identities, role models and social networks of the Vietnamese community and continue to shape them to this day.
