Ten years ago, on August 3, 2014, IS fighters attacked Ezidi villages in northern Iraq. They murdered and abducted thousands of people, raped and enslaved women and girls and displaced hundreds of thousands. Many people are still missing. Most of the displaced people in Iraq are still living in camps in unspeakable conditions. They cannot return to their homes. The Ezidi areas are not safe. Neither are Ezidis elsewhere in Iraq.

But even those who have made it to Germany fear for their ability to start a new life here. Although the Bundestag recognized the genocide last year, there have been repeated cases of threatened or even actual deportations of Iraqi E zidis in recent months.

What must society and politics do to ensure that Ezidis can live safely and well in Germany and Iraq? Why is there still no deportation ban for Iraqi Ezidis? Why is it so difficult in terms of foreign policy to contribute to the stability of the Ezidi areas in Shingal, northern Iraq?

Tobias Bachmann talks about this with Hakeema Taha, Düzen Tekkal, Max Lucks and Ronya Othmann.

Guest in the talk:

🐾 Max Lucks is a Green politician and chairman of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid in the Bundestag. He provides insights into the work for the rights of Yezidis within the Bundestag and the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid.

🐾 Ronya Othmann grew up as the daughter of a Kurdish Ezidi and a German. The award-winning writer and journalist talks about how she witnessed the genocide from Germany and how she has since come to terms with it in her writing.

🐾 Hakeema Taha was abducted from her village of Kojo by IS fighters at the age of 19. She tells how she experienced the IS attack and her escape from captivity, how she and her brother live in Germany today and what things have been like in her Iraqi homeland since then.

Düzen Tekkal grew up in Germany as the child of Ezidi Kurds. Today, she is an author, journalist and one of Germany's most visible human rights activists. She talks about the ongoing struggle of the diaspora in Germany and the lives of displaced Ezidis.

🐾 Tobias Bachmann moderates this talk. He is a taz author, journalist and political education worker.

Questions from the audience are welcome before and during the talk.
