Under the title "Three by Chance", the Kunsthalle Bremen focuses on the friendship between the Bremen artists Wolfgang Michael (*1941), Norbert Schwontkowski (1949-2013) and Horst Müller (*1943).
Michael, Schwontkowski and Müller met in Bremen in the 1960s, lived together at times and intensified their friendship. Founded in 1974 at Kohlhökerstraße 60a and lasting for over ten years, the living and studio community soon became a cultural hotbed in the city - reflecting their shared love of experimentation in artistic matters and the search for alternative lifestyles. During this decade, Michael, Schwontkowski and Müller shared their living and working spaces, philosophized, practiced yoga and exchanged views on current issues in art. In 1978, they presented their work for the first time in an exhibition in what was then the Paula-Becker-Modersohn-Haus in Böttcherstraße in Bremen.
