Turning Tables - A literary intervention by Weiter Schreiben in the exhibition "Hanna Bekker vom Rath. An insurgent for modernity"

Based on the poetic resilience of literature, four exiled authors from the Weiter Schreiben project will engage with the exhibition "Hanna Bekker vom Rath.An Insurgent for Modernity" at the Brücke-Museum in Berlin.

In search of connections and points of reference to the fearless commitment of Hanna Bekker vom Rath, Dima Albitar Kalaji (Syria/Germany), Sveta Ben (Belarus/Germany), Rasha Habbal (Syria/Germany) and Mazda Mehrgan (Afghanistan/Germany) reflect on the possibilities of poetic-artistic resistance against patriarchal violence and oppression today. Their performances will be accompanied by the musicians Bahila Hijazi and Louay Kanawati as well as the visual artist Marwa Younes Almokbel.

As part of a performative live performance at the museum's summer festival on June 16 at 2 p.m., the authors will present their texts in their original languages (Arabic, Persian, Belarusian) and the author Annika Reich and the theater maker Christiane Kühl will present them in German translation.

The exhibition "Hanna Bekker vom Rath. An Insurgent for Modernism" pays tribute to an important pioneer of modern art. Born and raised at a time when women had no right to vote and were only allowed to work with their husbands' permission, Hanna Bekker vom Rath (1893-1983) led a self-determined and emancipated life. Coming from a wealthy family, she was a passionate collector, courageous exhibition organizer and enthusiastic mediator and dealer, working tirelessly on behalf of modern art and artists.
