Valentin Ceccaldi’s Bonbon Flamme

In the organizer's words:
On opening day, French cellist Valentin Ceccaldi presents his new project Bonbon Flamme at Quasimodo - a wild mix of progressive rock and jazz, dedicated to experimentalism with childlike playfulness and breathless energy.

Similar to his older brother Théo, Valentin Ceccaldi first played drums before turning to the cello. Although he has now settled on one instrument for the time being, his music continues to exude a childlike playfulness that, based on a breathless energy, jumps from one idea to the next.

Over the past decade, Ceccaldi has collaborated with numerous musicians*, including legendary French bassist Joëlle Leándre and Berlin guitarist Ronny Graupe, from which the musical foundation for the wild sounds of his latest project Bonbon Flamme seems to have grown. On the quartet's recently released debut, Ceccaldi goes all out with his no less accomplished bandmates - Portuguese guitarist Luis Lopes, French drummer Étienne Ziemniak and Belgian keyboardist Fulco Ottervanger - in a series of eclectic, energetic group improvisations.

In the past, Ceccaldi has already paid homage to the music of British prog-rock band King Crimson. And although there is a clearly recognizable prog-rock virtuosity in Bonbon Flame as well, it never gets in the way of the group's almost anarchic sense of freedom. Ingeniously and exuberantly, the quartet mixes the most diverse lines of tradition - but no matter how far they push their experimentalism, they always pull together.
