Background:
The University and City Library of Cologne is presenting a unique photo exhibition from November 28, 2024 to February 2, 2025. On display is the private collection of the Berlin couple Anna and Richard Wagner, who documented their family Christmas celebrations over a period of 40 years.
The photos offer an insight into German family life from 1900 to 1945, showing festive moments, the decorated Christmas trees and the togetherness of the couple, who remained childless. These pictures are reminiscent of today's practice of capturing and sharing private moments - back then with a camera, today with smartphones on social media.
The exhibition is thought-provoking: about family structures, gender roles and the importance of tradition. It shows how middle-class family life through the ages has familiar parallels to the present day. At the same time, the old photos remind us how valuable and fragile memories are - a topic that is becoming increasingly topical in today's digital world.
Discover the fascinating world of the Wagners and experience how their story still touches us today.
This traveling exhibition is on loan from the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf Museum in the Villa Oppenheim in Berlin.
