Vom Werk zum Display

In the organizer's words:

How can the unique quality of works of art be conveyed in digital space? The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Kunsthalle Mannheim explored this question in the joint, multi-year research project "From Work to Display". Episodes were developed for 22 works of art from both collections, which pursue new, experimental approaches to communication in the digital space. A direct comparison between the original and the digital translation is possible on site in the museums.

For each of the selected works - including objects from the 19th century to contemporary works - an individual digital form of presentation was developed. At the Kunsthalle Mannheim, for example, Édouard Manet's work "The Shooting of Emperor Maximilian" (1868-69) from the museum's own collection was virtually overlaid with three other versions from museums in Boston, London and Copenhagen. The translation into digital format makes the development of the composition immediately apparent and comprehensible. The kinetic object "Kurbelwald" (1991) by Ernst Reinold, which visitors are usually not allowed to touch in a museum, can now be set in motion on a screen. The installation "Resonanz Raum" (2020) by Nevin Aladağ has also been digitally transformed at the Kunsthalle, allowing users not only to listen to music but also to mix it themselves. Range-zoomed directly onto the surface and backed with an audio collage of futuristic manifestos, the bronze sculpture "Unique Forms of Continuity in Space" (1913) by the artist Umberto Boccioni is transformed into a futuristic landscape.

The Kunsthalle Mannheim also features episodes on artworks by Constantin Brâncuşi, Gustave Courbet, Caspar David Friedrich, Richard Long, Franz Marc, Louise Nevelson and an episode on Kinetic Art with works by Jean Tinguely, Ernst Reinold and Adolf Luther.
