Voyage of the Lieutenant Nun

In the organizer's words:

"Voyage of the Lieutenant Nun" is an interdisciplinary project consisting of video, music and performance that explores the themes of gender diversity, discrimination and immigration through the story of the "Lieutenant Nun".

Catalina Alonso de Erauso was sent to a nunnery by her family in the 17th century, but fled to South America and became famous there as a man, mercenary and daredevil. This character wages a war against all boundaries set for a woman of the time and decides to travel to the New World and fight bloodily for his own freedom. The change of gender was approved by the Pope at the time and recorded by the character in her own words in an autobiography.

The project is sponsored by the Cultural Office of the City of Cologne. With absurd humor and colorful creativity, the play shows how forms of colonialism and sexism continue to have an effect today.

In the 75-minute, multilingual performance, the artists Cecilia Candia, Glauconar Yue, Konrad Bohley, Felipe González and Etienne Jean Marc, who live in Cologne and Brussels, take the audience on a journey through time and the diversity of gender poetics. The unique historical events thus encourage open reflection.

The performance will take place on Friday, 27.09.24, and Saturday, 28.09.2024, both at 20:00 at Kulturraum 405 e.V., Venloer Str. 405, 50825 Köln-Ehrenfeld. Free admission.
