Since the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the relationship with Israel has been the subject of intense debate in Germany. There have been some violent outbreaks of anti-Semitism on the streets and in social networks. Many Jews perceive the situation in Germany as increasingly threatening. German politicians have clearly sided with Israel. But how far does solidarity go? Should it be unconditional? And can it be in the face of an Israeli government that includes far-right ministers? What is legitimate criticism, and where does anti-Semitism dressed up as "criticism of Israel" begin? Werner Sonne was in Israel on October 7, 2023. In his new book, the well-known ARD journalist looks at the German debates on dealing with Israel and sums up the history of German-Israeli relations - from the difficult beginnings under Adenauer and Ben-Gurion to the purchase of the Israeli Arrow 3 missile defense system and the question of what the formula of Israel's security as Germany's 'reason of state' means in concrete terms.

Werner Sonne joined WDR in 1968. He initially worked in radio, switching to television in 1981. He was a correspondent in Washington and Warsaw, in the ARD capital studio and most recently at the ARD morning show.
