In Tokyo, Hirayama Koji (Yakusho) lives and works in modest circumstances, which some would describe as poor. A tiny apartment without a bathroom, which he leaves day after day to clean the toilets in the central Shibuya district for The Tokyo Toilet company. He goes about his work with the utmost calm and meticulousness, does the same rounds every day, eats his lunch in the same park, takes short breaks to watch the shadows cast by the leaves in the trees, reads novels in the evenings and appears to be completely satisfied with his life.
This man says very few words; his young colleague Takashi (Tokio Emoto) is quite different, he babbles where Hirayama communicates with gestures. Only when Hirayama's niece Niko (Arisa Nakano) turns up in his small apartment, apparently not the first time he has run away from home, does it become apparent that this voluntary hermit also has a family, from whom he deliberately keeps his distance.
