Reading and discussion with Anne Weber

Author and translator Anne Weber has been awarded this year's Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff Prize. On her prize reading tour, she is also a guest at the OWL Literature Office and presents her novel "Bannmeilen" in a reading and discussion with Albrecht Simons von Bockum Dolffs.

"Bannmeilen" is a novel in rambles: a documentary filmmaker friend invites the narrator to accompany him through the Parisian banlieue, which she previously refused to enter. The author herself, who has lived in Paris for 40 years, has also set off on foot, together with her friend Thierry, whose father comes from Algeria: they have walked hundreds of kilometers through the suburbs, the notorious banlieue. In Bannmeilen, Anne Weber opens herself up to the unfamiliar and the different in our midst with quiet wit and great powers of observation. She not only paints a picture of a complex friendship, but also the story of a multi-layered society in the Parisian suburbs that has never been seen before. Each chapter of the novel, which gradually evolves from the forays, reads like a reportage, with the author sometimes reproducing conversations verbatim. Gradually, a multi-layered picture of a complex society with deep rifts emerges. Open end.

The Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff Prize is awarded every five years by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) together with Burg Hülshoff - Center for Literature and the Literature Commission for Westphalia and is considered the most important literary prize in Westphalia. The prize, endowed with 35,000 euros, is awarded by a jury of experts to a personality who has distinguished themselves through particularly outstanding achievements in the field of literature.
