City portraits, landscapes, sea explorations: Over four decades, the painter, photographer, cameraman and director Peter Hutton has created meditative, brilliantly photographed, diary-like studies of places all over the world. Precisely observed, shot in long takes, on 16 mm and silent, some of his films are "urban explorations, somewhere between travelogue, world survey and edited memory. In BUDAPEST PORTRAIT, Hutton's idea of a 'naturalized' texture of artificial urban landscapes becomes manifest, the chiaroscuro of winter light, a feeling of loneliness and isolation. LODZ SYMPHONY conjures up an atmosphere long gone, populated only by the ghosts of Polish history." (Viennale)
