Augsburger Puppenkiste

The Augsburger Puppenkiste was founded in 1948 by actor and head director Walter Oehmichen and his wife Rose. Oehmichen's aim with his Puppenkiste was, on the one hand, to bring to the stage the material that he could not realize in the large Augsburg municipal theater and, on the other hand, to offer the war-torn population a distraction with his puppets. The Puppenkiste has been based in Augsburg's Heilig-Geist-Spital since its foundation. From the very beginning, it has worked with a permanent ensemble of puppeteers.
The Puppenkiste has become nationally known primarily through its television work, which has been a field of activity since 1953. Up to the present day, the company has made around 200 TV multi-part series and films, mainly for children, which were produced early on independently of the theater plays. For the Puppenkiste, television work was initially merely a way of earning money to bridge the theater vacations. Ultimately, however, it brought the theater its great fame. To this day, the Puppenkiste's theater work remains its artistic and economic focus.
The Puppenkiste is regarded as the city's flagship and is an important part of Augsburg's theater life alongside the Augsburg State Theater and various independent venues. The Puppenkiste sees itself as a theater with a "low entry threshold" that has developed a strong bond with its audience: Visitors who came as children often return for the rest of their lives, with children, grandchildren or to see performances for adults.
