From September 19 to 29, 2024, the Africa Film Festival Cologne (AFFK) will celebrate its 21st edition with around 70 historical and contemporary feature films, documentaries and short films from 23 African countries and the global diaspora.
More than 30 filmmakers, producers and guests will travel to Cologne for an exchange at eye level. The main program will be rounded off by a lively accompanying program of live music, panel talks, workshops and networking events.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
This year's program includes several German premieres such as DEATH OF A SAINT by Patricia Bbaale Bandak from Uganda, DIDY by Gaël Kamilindi and François-Xavier Destors from Rwanda and THE BRINK OF DREAMS by Nada Riyadh and Ayman El Amir from Egypt.
We are also looking forward to the world premiere of the film KIN'KONGOLO KINIATA by Nizar Saleh from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the European premiere of MOTHER CITY by Miki Redelinghuys & Pearlie Joubert from South Africa.
Numerous award-winning films from internationally renowned film festivals such as Sundance, Cannes and the Berlinale will also be screened. These include the winner of the Golden Bear DAHOMEY by Mati Diop. The work is about the repatriation to Africa of the treasures of the Kingdom of Dahomey stored in a Parisian museum.
The American director Billy Woodberry, born in Dallas in 1950 and co-founder of the "L.A. Rebellion" movement, will be in Cologne in person to present his latest documentary MARÍO. It tells the story of Mário de Andrade (1928 - 1990), a pan-African intellectual, activist, diplomat and poet who fought his entire life for African nation-building, firmly believing that independence from colonialism is the beginning and not the end of the struggle.
PANELS IN THE AUDITORIUM OF THE KUNSTHOCHSCHULE FÜR MEDIEN KÖLN
In three panel discussions at the 21st Africa Film Festival, a wide range of topics relating to African cinema will be discussed. Why do many African filmmakers not own the rights to their films? How many African films are actually in Western archives?
Where do documentary filmmakers draw the line between truth and fiction when choosing a protagonist? What are the limits of representation?
These and many other questions are explored in their various dimensions.
