In the early fall of 1989, Wilhelm Powileit celebrates his 90th birthday. He has been honored as a hero of the working class in the GDR, so his family and officials are at his birthday party. Nobody knows yet that Sascha, Wilhelm's grandson, has left the country and fled to the West. Only Kurt, Wilhelm's son and Sascha's father, suspects that something will change in the near future and that the Powileit family will also have to come to terms with the turmoil in the country.
