In the organizer's words:

GLOW UP - Celebrate democracy!

Democracy needs and thrives on diversity. With this approach, GLOW UP brings people together to carry our democracy into the future together - creatively, informatively and through dialog.
We launched "GLOW UP" in Cologne last year together with a team of colleagues who are connected to culture in different ways. Contributors included the WDR Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players, sign language poet Rafael-Evitan Grombelka, jazz singer Simin Tander and Cologne brass-pop band Querbeat.
As we are concerned that our basic democratic structure is increasingly under threat, we are convinced that, in view of the rise of right-wing extremism, there is a social need for an independent, democratic offering that stimulates discourse. All participants in GLOW UP celebrate what makes a diverse society in words and music on a voluntary basis and thus send a strong signal for a diverse democracy.
Because democracy, just like culture, needs and thrives on diversity!
On October 18, 2024 , we are therefore once again organizing an evening at the Kölner Philharmonie , where we will join forces with many artists from very different genres to stand up for the preservation and active shaping of our democracy.
The Stammtischkämpfer*innen organization will also be given a stage at the concert to present itself and its work. Their seminars will highlight possible courses of action that will help us to counter right-wing and racist slogans such as those of the AfD and its supporters.
This year's participants in the Philharmonie include: the Cologne band Brings, the street artists from Urbanatix with singer Svea Kirschmeier , the Academy of the WDR Symphony Orchestra, pianist Sina Kloke, singer-songwriter Becky Sikasa, jazz pianist Florian Weber, reggae/Afropop singer Treesha, artist and activist Shekib Mosadeq with Inés Fabig, poetry slammer Lukas Knoben and author Martin Hyun. The evening will be hosted by Yara Hoffmann
In the week surrounding the concert, there will also be themed workshops, exhibitions, special offers for schoolchildren, readings, films and discussion panels. Our cooperation partners include the Museum Ludwig, the COMEDIA Theater, the European Parliament's "Art in Democracy" project, the CORRECTIV research center , the "Aufstehen gegen Rassismus" initiative, Jugendpresse Deutschland, the Bonn Institute and the NS-Dokumentationszentrum in Cologne.
In addition to the Kölner Philharmonie and the Museum Ludwig, the venues are the NS-DOK, the Filmforum NRW, the COMEDIA Theater, the Kulturkirche and the Basement am Stadtgarten.
The approach of this private, voluntary initiative is to establish a democratic, party-politically independent platform with a festival character, which offers events that deal with the basic principles of democratic coexistence in various formats. In this way, we want to encourage people to inform themselves constructively and engage in dialog in order to better understand democracy and self-effective social mechanisms.
In the future, the event will not only be held in Cologne, but also in other cities. Instead of focusing on problems or, in the worst case, tolerating right-wing extremist ideologies, we focus on motivating people to help shape the society in which we want to live.
