The Russian writer M., who has been living in B. for several months, sets off for Denmark - she has been invited to a festival. The journey is full of mishaps: Trains don't run, the cell phone charging cable gets lost. No one is waiting at the station in F. and contact with the organizers has been broken off. But the new situation fills her with relief: this is her chance to finally disappear from the world. M. wanders through the city and comes across a circus that hires her to perform the 'sawed-up virgin' trick...
The story unfolds against the backdrop of the summer of 2023: Russia's war against Ukraine never ends. Allusions from Hobbes to Nabokov run through Stepanova's thoughtful prose. She has written an invitation to self-decapitation, nothing more and nothing less. It is up to us, the readers, whether we want to understand her 'leap' as an act of liberation or negation.
Maria Stepanova is the most internationally successful Russian poet of the present day. She has received numerous awards for her extensive lyrical and essayistic work. Her prose debut After Memory (2018) has been translated into numerous languages.
