In the organizer's words:

How can trust in democracy work in times of misinformation, disinformation and fake news? How can society pull together when everyone lives in their own bubbles and there is less and less common ground when it comes to evaluating (political) issues? And how did we actually get to this point?

In an interview with communication scientists Lena Frischlich and Carsten Reinemann, we shed light on the causes of this trend of mistrust: from formative factors such as social media or the Covid-19 pandemic, but also the small pinpricks such as a populist statement from a politician here or an untruth there. In addition to this analysis, the researchers also provide us with ideas on what we can do to counter a communication culture of mistrust. After all, our democratic society and its institutions are not helpless in the face of hate speech and conspiracy narratives.
