WHY "COMIC"? With the name Komische Oper, founding father Walter Felsenstein drew on the immediacy and popular appeal of the French genre opéra comique in 1947, but also on the Berlin Komische Oper in Friedrichstraße on Weidendammer Brücke, which was destroyed in the war and whose artistic director Hans Gregor was inspired by similar ideas from 1905 to 1911 and called for an "art without convention, prejudice and artistic idiosyncrasies". Today, the Komische Oper Berlin is still home to a permanent ensemble of virtuoso singer-performers who present the entire spectrum of musical theater, from the oldest operas by Claudio Monteverdi to Mozart and world premieres of contemporary works. Barrie Kosky's directorship from 2012-2022 continued the tradition, but also reflected on the history of the opera house on Behrenstraße before 1945. Repressed and forgotten works are back on the repertoire, rarely or never heard works by composers who disappeared from the scene under the National Socialists and are often unjustly misjudged to this day. The Berlin jazz operetta of the 1920s and 1930s proved its witty humor under Kosky; freed from the kitsch of the 1950s, many a piece was shown in a completely new light. The Komische Oper Berlin as the legitimate heir to the Metropol Theater.
Currently: The Komische Oper Berlin is being made fit for the musical theater of the new millennium. The coming years will be dominated by extensive (and necessary) renovation work on the main building on Behrenstrasse. During the renovation period, opera will not only be performed in the interim venue Schillertheater, but also at various temporary locations in the city. For example, the festival for brand new music theater Schall&Rausch, which sets up its tents every year in the Kindl-Brauerei and SchwuZ in Neukölln. Susanne Moser and Philip Bröking are the first two directors at the helm of Komische Oper Berlin. Under their directorship, the Komische Oper Berlin stands for diverse, courageous and lively musical theater with seriousness and lightness.
