The Academic Choir was founded in 1999 by the then university music director Tobias Hiller as an extension of the Camerata vocalis chamber choir.
From the very beginning, the ensemble has performed not only the great oratorios but also less frequently performed works, such as Poulenc's Gloria, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona nobis pacem and Britten's War Requiem (for the opening of the European Church Music Festival in Schwäbisch Gmünd in July 2005). In 2001, the choir performed Honegger's King David in Tübingen's twin city Aix-en-Provence/France. For the 525th anniversary of the university, a commissioned composition by Age Hirv (Estonia) had its world premiere in Tübingen in July 2002. The choir has repeatedly performed in the renowned series Stunde der Kirchenmusik in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, most recently with Haydn's Jahreszeiten and the Stabat mater by Karol Szymanowski. In summer 2008, Arthur Honegger's oratorio Jeanne d'Arc, which is rarely performed in Germany due to its extensive and complex scoring, was performed to great acclaim in Sindelfingen and Tübingen. For the Mendelssohn Year, his Lobgesang was performed with the Sinfonietta Tübingen. This collaboration continued in the fall of 2009 with Haydn's Stabat mater.
Since 2011, the Academic Choir has been under the direction of UMD Philipp Amelung. Since then, works such as the "German Requiem" by Johannes Brahms, the "Christmas Oratorio" by J. S. Bach, Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem", Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Paulus", Mozart's "Coronation Mass", Orff's "Carmina Burana" and Lully's "Te Deum" as well as world premieres such as the cantata "Golgotha" by Markus Höring or the oratorio "The Natures complaint about Human Mankind" by Philip Carleston and a broad repertoire of acapella works have been rehearsed and performed.
