*1963, studied Literature and Sociology in Bielefeld and Literature Mediation & Media Practice in Essen. He lives in Cologne and works as a literary translator, photographic artist and occasional author.
Thorough planning and precise timing are at the forefront of many of his landscape images. With the help of maps, formulas and calendars, he determines the location of the tripod to within a few meters. As far as his contribution to the shot is concerned, clear rules form the basis of the concept.
However, his responsibility ends the moment the shutter release is pressed for the long exposure shots. What ends up on the sensor over the next few minutes, hours or the entire night is beyond his control. He only intervenes again when he decides to close the camera curtain.
Andreas Helweg is not a painter of light, but a collector of light. The photographs from the "Night like Day" project are primarily about collecting so much light that the difference between daylight (sun) and night light (moon, stars, lanterns) becomes blurred.
