Passion, esprit, creative joy, sensuality of sound, vocal precision and flexibility - these are just some of the attributes that are regularly attributed to the choir of the Bach-Verein Köln and have earned it a reputation as one of the "top choirs in the cathedral city" over the years. For 95 years now, the 65-strong vocal ensemble has been delighting its concert audiences season after season with choral music of all kinds - and far beyond the region.

The Bach-Verein Köln, founded on May 21, 1931 in an effort to "pass on the immeasurable spiritual and religious values that Bach bequeathed to us in these works", can look back on a line-up of important conductors, including Hermann Schroeder, Kurt Thomas, Wolfgang Gönnenwein and Rolf Reinhardt. Thomas Neuhoff was responsible for the most formative era to date from 2002 to 2020. Under his direction, a new level of programming was achieved with premieres and first performances, student projects and innovative accompanying events.

Christoph Siebert has been Artistic Director of the Bach-Verein Köln since July 2020. The repertoire performed under his direction since then, including Bach's Mass in B minor, Handel's "Dixit Dominus" and "Ein Deutsches Requiem" by Brahms, motets by Schütz, Bach, Brahms and Duruflé as well as compositions by Palestrina, Parsons, Byrd, Schubert, Reger, Britten, Pizzetti, F. Martin, Pärt and Tavener, testifies to the stylistic range that will also determine the programs of the coming seasons: Masterpieces by the choir's namesake Johann Sebastian Bach, a fundamental concern of the choir, as well as music by old and new masters, chamber music and large-scale oratorio and choral symphonic works and a cappella literature from all eras.

At the end of the 2025/26 season, the Bach-Verein Köln will celebrate its 95th birthday with Berlioz's rarely performed "Messe solennelle".
