For Berlin-based singer and songwriter Chris de Sarandy, 2023 was probably the most eventful year of his music career to date: the release of his indie pop debut EP 'Know Your Worth', the summer hit 'Cynical' together with (Safriduo and) two colors, which was followed by numerous live performances with the German electro house duo, and a nomination for the 1LIVE Krone. Over the past year, de Sarandy has undoubtedly made a lasting first impression on the music landscape with his easy-going manner and powerful voice.
Growing up in the South West of England, Chris de Sarandy started playing in an indie band at the age of 14. Shortly before starting university, the band broke up and the desire for a more "natural and mature" sound led Chris to write his own music. In his adopted home of Berlin, he met producers and other musicians and was discovered by the Embassy of Music label, which recognized his artistic potential and signed him. On 'Know Your Worth', he presented ten electro-acoustic indie pop songs in his direct, conversational style, which he has written over the last four years - a real coming-of-age EP.
After his second successful radio single 'Magic Moment' (#2 airplay charts) with Glockenbach, Chris is now preparing for his first single release in a year. With 'Rain', Chris is taking the next step as a successful indie pop newcomer and we are excited to see which path the young high-flyer will take with it.
Debut EP "Know Your Worth"
Infused with a sense of nostalgia, painful and beautiful experiences, the risk of leaving behind everything you hold dear - friends, family and relationships - in order to stay true to yourself, "Know Your Worth" traces Chris' life journey from the UK to Berlin: In "Small Town Queen" already shows the first signs of a crumbling facade of his supposedly perfect small-town home, while in "Autopilot" Chris addresses the slow fading of his relationship. Looking back, "Highway Love" poses the question of whether the long, arduous journey was worth it all ("We had it all but was it worth keeping?").
In "That's Life", a fragmentary answer is finally revealed in finding a new home in an imperfect world, with a feeling of resignation, but alsoacceptance of one's own path so far. The title track "Know Your Worth" is above all a tribute to one of de Sarandy's closest friends, whose life came to an abrupt end in a tragic suicide. The feeling of irretrievable loss that Chris experienced through the early death of his friend cannot be put into words. Not least because of the unconditional faith that this friend had placed in de Sarandy's career: "He was the first person outside my family to tell me that I could do it," Chris remembers fondly. "The belief and trust he gave me that it would work out has always stayed with me."
'Mate, was there something I could have done?
Oh, I hate thinking how you were so young.'
['Was there anything I could have done?
Oh, I hate thinking how you were so young'].
"Those words - 'Know Your Worth' - aren't just an EP and song title; they became a saying of their own that my friends and I keep as a reminder of our friend," de Sarandy explains. "A friend of mine even had it tattooed as a reminder of him." The pain of losing a loved one and the redemptive power of art - in this case songwriting - is nowhere more present than in the interlude "Worth", a letter addressed to Chris' deceased friend, which begins with the words 'Mate, was there something I could have done? / Oh, I hate thinking how you were so young'.
Almost therapeutic in nature, Chris de Sarandy invites us on "Know Your Worth" to reconsider the importance of healthy self-esteem in every aspect of life. "A lot of the songs on the EP are about not always valuing yourself. I still struggle with appreciating myself more," admits de Sarandy, "It's very important to recognize your own value in order to appreciate that of another person. I want to shine a light on the subject with this message."
