"My work begins where the media meet".

As a media artist, Claudia Schmitz explores boundaries: Boundaries of perception,
real and imaginary barriers, flowing processes, body discourses, paradigms of media translation. She uses sound, sculpture and projection, multidimensional drawing, (live) moving image and AI - in real space, in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) - to explore new forms of sound, space and experience. The questioning of hegemonic perception, the exploration of identity and space, the exploration of identity in virtual and real space, reactivity vs. interactivity, inter- and transmediality, machine learning and artificial intelligence are the main themes of her current artistic research.

In her current work, for example, Claudia Schmitz examines systems of community in the interplay between human and post-human artists and raises questions about authorship, participation and autonomy. In a transmedia monologue with what she calls AAI (Artifical Artistic Intelligence) - based on programming in collaboration with Nesa Popov - she questions dialog structures, aesthetic patterns and intentions for action within these systems. In the interplay of conversation and manipulation, the human-machine duo creates an autopoetic dialog whose attribution remains deliberately open.

Thanks to the Goethe-Institut, the German Federal Cultural Foundation and many other funding institutions, her work has already been realized and exhibited in more than 20 countries. She has received numerous awards and her works are represented in public and private collections internationally.

Claudia Schmitz studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, among others.

"What interests me about technology is not that it is modern, but that it enables me to create new pictorial spaces."
