In the artist's words:

Bernhard Hatterscheidt has been a police officer for over 40 years and learned the job from the ground up.

In the first few years after his training, he gained experience in patrol duty and the so-called Einsatzhundertschaft. As a newly qualified detective superintendent, he joined the Cologne homicide squad in 1996 and, in addition to murder and manslaughter, also dealt with medical cases, fatal industrial accidents, countless suicides and death investigations.

Today, as a chief detective inspector, he investigates official and corruption offenses.
