The GewandhausChor is closely linked to the Gewandhaus Orchestra and can look back on a tradition of more than 150 years. Famous conductors have worked with the orchestra, including the current Thomaskantor and Gewandhauskapellmeister - most recently Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly and Andris Nelsons. The choir has been conducted by Gregor Meyer since the 2007/2008 season.
The ensemble's repertoire is varied and requires a flexible voice and the willingness to engage with new programmatic approaches time and again. Many projects are developed with special partners, giving them their own unique character. Highlights include the collaboration with Nils Landgren, Herbert Feuerstein, the actresses Katharina, Anna and Nellie Thalbach and the staged performance of Bach's St. Mark Passion in an accessible concept together with deaf artists. The choir also ventured into exciting experiments with piano-electro artist Martin Kohlstedt(Ströme) and jazz pianist Jonas Timm. Together they created Wege zum Kreuz, a program that explores the human relationship to death and dying. In the 2024/2025 season, several of the choir's concerts will shed light on various aspects of democracy and social coexistence.
Highlights of the choir's life include concert tours abroad - most recently to Switzerland, the Vatican, the Lucerne Festival, the BBC Proms, the Vienna Musikverein, the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks in Toblach, India and Vietnam. The singers have also performed in unusual venues such as the Leipzig Picture Museum, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, the Theater am Rand, the crematorium at Leipzig's South Cemetery and the cult pub Weißer Holunder in Cologne.
The GewandhausChor regularly collaborates with other renowned choirs, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and other instrumental ensembles. In the field of historically oriented performance practice, it works closely with the camerata lipsiensis. Both ensembles repeatedly perform large-scale Romantic oratorios - such as Hiller's Zerstörung Jerusalems, Schneider's Weltgericht, Marx's Mose, Raff's Welt-Ende - Gericht - Neue Welt and most recently Reinecke's Sommertagsbilder and Belshazzar. The live recordings of these works have all been or will be released by cpo. Various other CD, DVD, television and radio productions testify to the ensemble's versatile artistic work. For example, Mahler's 2nd Symphony in a version for two pianos, trumpet, soloists and choir, Schubert's Winterreise in Gregor Meyer's version for baritone, choir and two accordions and a Christmas CD recorded together with other Gewandhaus ensembles were released in 2023.
