Classical ballet and modern forms

The Hamburg Ballet is known far beyond the borders of the Hanseatic city. Worldwide guest performances make the company an integral part of the international ballet scene - with over 1000 performances on five continents. The performances at the Hamburg State Opera are among the cultural highlights for many dance enthusiasts.

For decades, John Neumeier shaped the artistic profile of the Hamburg Ballet as ballet director (1973-2024). In his works, he combined the tradition of classical ballet with contemporary forms of expression and thus developed an unmistakable choreographic language.

Demis Volpi led the company from August 2024 to June 2025. Since the beginning of the 2025/26 season, the Hamburg Ballet has been led on an interim basis by Lloyd Riggins (Artistic Ballet Director) and Nicolas Hartmann (Managing Ballet Company Director).
