The Berliner Compagnie

was founded in 1981 as an independent theater group by actors from various municipal, state and independent theaters. Based on the realization that peace is inextricably linked to justice, the group adopted a constitution in which it pledged to use its theater to "serve the preservation of peace, international understanding and social justice, especially with regard to the Third World" (§ 2 of the statutes of the non-profit association BC).

In the meantime (in 2025), 37 theater productions on development, peace, human and animal rights issues have been created and shown at almost 2,500 guest performances at the invitation of non-governmental organizations - from church communities, trade unions, theaters, schools and citizens' initiatives in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Poland, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
The BC has been supported eighteen times by the EED, fourteen times by the Berlin Senate (including eight times by the LEZ), six times by the EU Commission, eight times by the BMZ via InWEnt or FEB, as well as by the Fonds Darstellende Künste, the Katholischer Fonds, the GTS Stifterfonds Samenkorn-Gerechtigkeit, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the GLS-Treuhand, Aktion Selbstbesteuerung (asb), Aktion Hoffnung, the Anawati Foundation and, via a support association, by many private donors.
In 2004, the BC published a four-volume edition with twelve pieces. This was followed in 2017 by three volumes with a further nine plays. In September 2009, the theater group received the National Aachen Peace Prize.
