Luigi Toscano

In the artist's words:

Photographer and filmmaker Luigi Toscano is a self-taught photographer with an eventful life. As a roofer, doorman and window cleaner, the son of Italian migrant workers experienced his environment from a wide variety of perspectives. It is unusual for this to develop into an artistic career. Luigi Toscano's works focus on people and tell the stories behind the visible. His art speaks a language that everyone can understand. He also uses this language to position himself clearly and make a socio-political statement. More and more, he is conquering public spaces for this purpose. Building façades, squares or parks: instead of behind shielded museum doors, his pictures are presented in freely accessible places.

This concept was used for the first time in 2014: with Heimat_Asyl, Luigi Toscano brought the larger-than-life portraits and stories of asylum seekers to a central square in his home city of Mannheim - and thus to the attention of thousands of people. He then launched GEGEN DAS VERGESSEN in 2014.

In March 2021, Luigi Toscano was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace for his work - the world's first photographer ever to do so. A few months later, in October, the Federal President and former patron of the project, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, presented him with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He returned this in February 2025 together with Holocaust survivor Albrecht Weinberg in protest against the CDU's joint vote with the AfD.
