Mariybu

In the artist's words:

She is the Queen Bee of German hyperpop: in recent years, Berlin artist Mariybu has made a name for herself far beyond the queer scene as a visionary singer, producer and empowering role model. Sometimes strong and combative, sometimes sweet and playful, but always uncompromisingly herself - this is how the musician presents herself on stage.

Mariybu first appeared on the scene in 2018 with her EP "Depression". At that time, the artist still felt at home in hip-hop. Right from the start, her songs were about loyalty among FLINTA* and took on toxic men and the patriarchy. After two rap EPs, the single "Datenight" marked a shift in Mariybu's musical style: the Krach+Getöse award winner, who was still living in Hamburg at the time, had discovered hyperpop for herself - and thus a genre that would give her much more room for innovative sound as a producer than hip-hop. Her definitive hyperpop manifesto followed in 2023 with her debut album "Slaybae": "You're shocked because it's different, hyperpop to the max, EDM, rap, techno, yes, everything at the start, take it apart, just because I can, yes"

Her first solo tour then took Mariybu to 15 cities. The fact that she also made her stages available to other female and genderqueer talents such as jolle, Angel Rider and Lil' Lil' perfectly sums up Mariybu's artistic DNA: It's about mutual empowerment in an industry that still doesn't allow enough space for women and queer people. As a self-producing artist, Mariybu may be DIY through and through - she not only tears down the walls of the industry for herself, but also for others.

And on an artistic level too, the Berliner-by-choice has left all genre conventions behind her. Just six months after "Slaybae", she released four more hyperpop anthems with her EP "KussKuss <3". Her first musical sign of life in 2024 followed in June with "Wie du mich mochtest". The route ahead? Full speed ahead towards album number 2.
