An old electric piano, a 9 square meter room in a shared flat in Berlin, a window where the Berlin S-Bahn rattles past every 5 minutes - this sound belongs to newcomer mathi.

For now, his path is a familiar one. Four years ago, he moved from the Hamburg suburbs to the big city, from Schleswig-Holstein to Berlin. Music came along in 2024, unexpectedly for everyone except mathi himself. He uploaded his first songs to Spotify without much notice, just like that. Then the ball started rolling. The right playlists and suddenly there were over 100,000 and people who liked how and what mathi sings about.

His lyrics are coming-of-age stories, seemingly "normal" descriptions of everyday life with a deeply melancholy tone. Many people recognize themselves in the images that mathi paints linguistically. Being lost in the big city, fears for the future and unhappy love, often sung about and yet mathi gives these themes a special intensity, his method: radical vulnerability. His lyrics are carried by his sometimes smoky, sometimes juicy voice and his special way of playing instruments: broken guitars instead of clean ones, a single, almost lost violin, choirs as lead instruments, but also large orchestral moments in contrast make the sound unmistakable. The music is honest. His sound is full of ideas. His stories are about him and yet somehow about everyone.
