The "medicanti" orchestra was founded in 1986 by medical students at the former Dresden Medical Academy (now the University Hospital). Under the direction of Christian Möbius, the initial baroque ensemble developed into a chamber orchestra with around 20 members. In the years that followed, the conductors changed at regular intervals and the orchestra was able to gain new experiences and experience unforgettable moments with each one - from the first German-German orchestra meeting in June 1990 to second place at the Chamber Orchestra Competition of the Free State of Saxony in 1995 and an orchestra trip to Greece.

In 2002, Wolfgang Behrend took over the direction of the orchestra. As "medicanti" always welcomes music enthusiasts from all professions and fields of study, the orchestra quickly developed into a powerful symphony orchestra under his direction, with a repertoire that is now considerable. The performance of Johannes Brahms' German Requiem with the Czech choir "Prager Sänger" on February 13, 2007 in the Kreuzkirche in Dresden was one of the first highlights, which was followed by numerous others in the years that followed.
