Since its founding in 1893, the orchestra has enriched Munich's musical life under renowned conductors. Gustav Mahler conducted the premieres of his Fourth and Eighth Symphonies, and in November 1911 Mahler's "Lied von der Erde" was premiered under Bruno Walter's direction. Ferdinand Löwe, Eugen Jochum, Hans Rosbaud, Fritz Rieger and Rudolf Kempe were pioneering conductors on the podium of the Munich Philharmonic.

With its "Spielfeld Klassik" program, the Munich Philharmonic has developed an extensive outreach program for all generations in recent years. Up to 35,000 interested people of all ages attend the more than 150 events each year. Under the motto "MPhil on site," the Munich Philharmonic can also be experienced as the "orchestra of the city" at unusual venues such as the Hofbräuhaus, alpine pastures, clubs and industrial halls. In 2018/19, the Munich Philharmonic celebrated its 125th anniversary.

In October 2021, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra opened its new home and venue, the Isarphilharmonie, while the Gasteig is being renovated. The new home of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra was designed by the architectural firm "von Gerkan, Marg und Partner," while Yasuhisa Toyota and his firm Nagata Acoustics are responsible for the acoustics. Being close and going new ways - this is the new motto of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. To this end, the festival program is being expanded, and new formats such as "mphil late," "NACHtKLANG" and "Wandelkonzerte," which will be held regularly from now on, create new access points for a curious audience.
