Patricia Carolin Mai

In the artist's words:

Patricia Carolin Mai produces contemporary dance pieces as a dancer and choreographer with her main production location at Kampnagel and K3 | Tanzplan Hamburg. She explores movement as a somatic, empowering practice and examines bodies in extreme states - often in intergenerational and participatory projects.

Whether in Belgium, France, Italy or Korea - new people and perspectives are constantly being added to her pieces, which tour internationally and are created in dialog with local contexts. In 2025, she founded MAI:COMPANY - Hamburg's first cross-generational, fluid company with people from the city.

Mai also works as a lecturer and mentor at universities in Germany and abroad. Since 2019, she has been researching soft skills in dance education in the EU project Empowering Dance. In 2020, she was recognized as a "newcomer" and remarkable personality in the dance scene by the trade magazine tanz.

In 2023/2024, she took over the artistic direction of the youth dance company STEP BY STP at the Festspielhaus St. Pölten (Austria). Most recently, she presented her solo "Komm gucken" (premiere: Kampnagel) in January 2025 and the large-scale community project "Futur X - Wann ist morgen?" at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (premiere: Elbphilharminie, Hamburg) in May 2025.

Outlook:
From May 2025 to winter 2027, MAI:COMPANY will be exploring the topic of community in greater depth. With the new piece "Rockoko" (premiere 2026), the company positions itself against increasing repression and censorship in everyday life and sets an example for a resistant dance. In ROCKOKO, the dancers perform in skirts and celebrate the individuality of each body hidden beneath them.
