What remains of humanity when we simply look away? "Heart of Barbed Wire" is a moving look at the reality of war and flight - honest, close and uncomfortable.

The award-winning journalist takes you to the crisis areas of the world: to Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, refugee camps in Lebanon, the West Bank and Greece. There she meets women, children and families - people who have lost everything.

With unsparing clarity, she tells of destruction, loss and hope, asks uncomfortable questions about the responsibility of the West and documents life in exceptional situations.

Maier meets people who fight for justice - and show that humanity is never completely lost. Her book is a reminder and a call to take a closer look.
