Are there alternative park ideas to the usual suspected green spaces? Yes, there are. Fortunately, Munich has more to offer than just the well-known oases for strolling. We present ten alternative park ideas to the English Garden & Co.

Blutenburg Castle

Nymphenburg Palace Park: Sure, everyone knows it. But how many of you have ever been for a walk at Blutenburg Palace? Good to know: Alongside Grünwald Castle, Blutenburg is the only medieval castle complex in the Munich area. Incidentally, there is not only a sculpture park here, but also the Michael Ende Museum, among other things. And when you've finished visiting the castle grounds, church and museum, you can relax in the castle's own tavern. Blutenburg Castle is also known for its wine festivals, open-air cinema evenings and the Christmas market.

Rose garden

No longer an insider tip in Untergiesing, of course, but always worth a visit: the rose garden. With its beautiful roses and other wonderful flowers, you can neither see nor smell enough in summer. In June and July, over 1,000 roses of all colors are on display here. You can find out exactly which types of roses grow on the small explanatory panels. But we actually find this garden beautiful at any time of year. Yoga sessions are also held here from time to time. There is also a playground in the rose garden - so this oasis for strolling is equally interesting for young and old.

Perlach Forest

For those who like it spacious and need a good alternative to the English Garden: Perlacher Forst it is! Here you can easily go several kilometers without running into anyone. In Perlacher Forst, you can not only fill up your water bottle at a fountain, but also take a look at the beautifully designed biotope for native amphibians. In spring, countless tadpoles frolic in two ponds and in summer there is live music here - in the form of a quack concert. And what would a walk in the woods be without a viewpoint? On the "Perlacher Muggl", in good weather and depending on the height of the trees, you can even see as far as the Alps.

City forest at Ackermannbogen

Seen enough of the Olympic Park? Then why not walk a few meters further to Ackermannbogen? The city forest with maple and chestnut trees as well as lime, ash and oak trees awaits you here. In addition to the city forest, there is also the "Place of Silence". Here you can see all kinds of flowers, shrubs, climbing roses and clematis, which form an arbor-like space that turns into a romantic flowering splendour in early summer. And on the gravel area, chairs invite you to linger.

Luitpolpark

Another good alternative to the Olympic Park is the Luitpoldpark. Not only can you improve your table tennis skills here, but in summer you can also admire a hedge maze or linger in the beer garden. You can also go "up high", as the Luitpoldhügel is a wonderful vantage point at 37 meters. In winter, by the way, it becomes a popular tobogganing hill.

Old North Cemetery

The Old North Cemetery in Maxvorstadt offers a nice alternative to the old South Cemetery in the Glockenbach district. Ok, it's a little smaller but no less beautiful and relaxing. Here you can take a few leisurely laps or simply relax on a park bench. There are also graves of well-known personalities at the old North Cemetery. For example, the writer Hermann Lingg or Carl von Thieme, the founder of Munich Re and Allianz Insurance. Just keep your eyes open to see who else you discover.

Sendlinger Park

If Westpark is too crowded for you, you don't have to leave the neighborhood for an alternative. There is also Sendlinger Park, which is often forgotten. Here you can not only walk, jog, cycle, see various allotments or skate: Sendlinger Park also impresses with a beautiful view from Neuhofener Berg. On a clear day, the view extends not only as far as the Frauenkirche, but even as far as the Alps! At the highest point of Neuhofener Berg there is a pavilion with a fountain and right next to it a war memorial commemorating those who died in the Second World War.

Bavariapark

If strolling around the Theresienwiese is not enough, we recommend going behind the statue of Bavaria: The Bavariapark of the same name. It is one of Munich's smaller parks and yet it has the highest density of sculptures. From the reclining spring nymph to the resting faun and the bronze stag - a walk here is almost like a visit to an open-air museum. But you can also satisfy your hunger and thirst here, as the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark is - as the name suggests - not very far away. So if you're out and about in the Westend and need a short break, why not pop in?

Western cemetery

The Westfriedhof is one of the four largest cemeteries in Munich. And yet the subway station is probably better known for its eye-catching design. But it's also worth going upstairs and taking a short walk through the Westfriedhof. Here you can not only see beautifully decorated steles in the mosaic garden, but also admire all kinds of other works created by sculptors. You can also visit the grave of Father Timofei, the builder of the East-West Peace Church on the Olympic site.

Forstenrieder Park

Forstenrieder Park is not only literally a normal park, but also a wildlife park. Formerly a hunting ground, it now has a forest ecosystem. The almost 20 square kilometers are home to many native animals. So you might come across a family of wild boar, roe deer and/or stags on your walk. Please note: For this reason, dogs must be kept on a lead so as not to signal any danger to the wild animals or disturb them.
