14 places where you can get good doughnuts
We will probably have to do without carnival again this year. But certainly not doughnuts. To help you stock up on the good stuff, here are a few doughnut dealer tips from the editorial team.
Alof
80469 München
In addition to the world's best pretzel deal - a pretzel has always cost 50 cents - the Alof bakery also has a very good selection of doughnuts. Every carnival season, space is made behind the counter for such good creations as doughnuts with a raspberry and redcurrant filling. Mmmh!
Brot- und Feinbäckerei Neulinger
81667 München
Regardless of the doughnut season, one of our favorite bakeries in Munich is the Neulinger bakery. This could be because we ourselves once stood in the Sendling bakery and baked pretzels. But don't worry, we no longer have anything to do with the baked goods, so you can go for the doughnuts with confidence. Be sure to treat yourself to one of the Clownies doughnuts - 20 cents of each will go to the KlinikClowns, who have been making people laugh in hospitals, retirement homes, facilities for people with disabilities and hospices for more than 20 years.
Bäckerei & Konditorei Ludwig Riedmair
81543 München
It's actually worth visiting the Riedmair branches every week during the doughnut season, because they offer the so-called KDWs. Or doughnuts of the week. The limited editions, such as a unicorn version, are available for exactly seven days. If that's almost too unusual for you, you can also look forward to classic fillings such as jam, mousse and cream fillings.
Café an der Münchner Freiheit
80802 München
When there's an extra doughnut store online, we doughnut fans know it can only mean good things. The café at Münchner Freiheit offers a total of 13 different types of doughnuts. They also include Strauben, a traditional Bavarian pastry made from choux pastry, which some of you may be familiar with. If you want to try it, you now know where.
Kistenpfennig
80333 München
Not only spelt mothers eat spelt doughnuts, we do too. And we love the ones from the Kistenpfennig bakery in Theresienstraße. The family bakery not only makes spelt with apricot filling, but also yeast dumpling doughnuts, bee sting doughnuts and salted caramel doughnuts. The latter two are only available from 10 a.m. and are therefore ideal for all late risers. Of course, Kistenpfennig is not only available in Maxvorstadt, but also in some other parts of the city.
Café Frischhut
80331 München
Café Frischhut at Viktualienmarkt may be best known for its lard noodles, but it can also make doughnuts. If you're in the mood for traditional doughnuts, this is the place for you. With fresh doughnuts in hand, you can then stroll around the Viktualienmarkt and mourn the carnival celebrations that usually take place there on Shrove Tuesday. Then again in 2023.
Chocolatte Konditorei & Bäckerei
81667 München
Although the small bakery originally comes from Bogenhausen, it is also a permanent fixture in Wörthstraße. As a result, there may well be a queue waiting for you if you want to pick up something at Chocolatte. But it's worth it. And not just for pretzels or the small chocolate bundt cakes, but also for doughnuts. In addition to the classic doughnuts with rosehip or apricot jam, there is also good stuff like glazed strawberry doughnuts or chocolate doughnuts.
Bäckerei Zöttl
80339 München
A stable bakery in any case: Zöttl, which has 37 stores in Munich. You can't go wrong here at doughnut time either. Either you go the safe route with apricot jam or you indulge in the really sweet things, we'll just say Baileyskrapfen. A very convenient option: you can also order your choice of doughnuts online and have them delivered to your home by courier. Add a bottle of Prosecco to your shopping cart and the doughnut party can begin.
Bäckermeister Brücklmaier
81737 München
In our Insta poll for the best doughnuts in Munich, the Brückelmeier bakery was also mentioned more often. So if you're ever out and about in Vatterstetten, Perlach or Neubiberg(you can find more branches here), check out the doughnut range.
Café VorOrt
82061 Neuried
Not necessarily in the Munich city center area, but maybe some of you are from the Neurieder area anyway or you happen to be there from time to time. If this is the case, we can recommend the doughnuts from Café VorOrt. In addition to the more classic varieties such as strawberry and vanilla, cherry or rosehip, there are also specialty doughnuts such as Bienenstich, Black Forest and strawberry limes at the weekends. Mhhhh, strawberry limes doughnuts - you can't really get more carnival in a doughnut.
Konditorei Detterbeck
For those of you from Laim, Café Detterbeck has of course long been a household name, not least because of the excellent ice cream served here. But Detterbeck also knows what it's doing when it comes to doughnut baking. The fillings may not be overly experimental, but you can be sure that they taste good. Because you can't really go wrong with plum and poppy seed or eggnog.
Bäckerei Ziegler
80636 München
There are now so many branches of the traditional Ziegler bakery in Munich that we need far more than ten fingers to list them. The good thing for you: there is one or even two Ziegler bakery branches in pretty much every neighborhood. But now to the boiled pastries: in addition to the more classic doughnuts with apricot or rosehip filling, you can also get more unusual creations such as those with Marc de Champagne filling and white chocolate icing, apple and walnut doughnuts or caramel doughnuts.
Café Kustermann
80337 München
Café Kustermann prepares diligently for the doughnut season every year, as the rush is always great. From February onwards, you will find doughnuts with apricot, rosehip, strawberry, plum, chocolate or vanilla fillings on display as standard. The cappuccino and eggnog varieties alternate daily and from Monday to Friday there is a special doughnut of each of the following: Salted Caramel, Peanut, Hazelnut, Hot Love and Champagne. If that doesn't sound good.
Cumpanum
81541 München
The Cumpanum branch on Nockherberg is a brand new addition to Munich's city center. Since January, the bakery on Regerstraße has been serving baked goods made without wheat flour and with real homemade sourdough. Instead of wheat, the focus here is on spelt, rye, emmer and einkorn. And the same goes for the doughnuts. They are made from 100% spelt and filled with raspberry jam.
Vegan doughnuts
The demand for vegan doughnuts is high - at least among you readers. It's just that Munich bakeries don't offer them. We asked many bakeries directly whether they offer vegan doughnuts. The answer was always "unfortunately not". However, the bakeries in organic supermarkets such as Basic, Denns or Vollcorner are a good place to go for vegan doughnuts. Basic, for example, sources its doughnuts from the organic bakery Schubert, which also supplies the two Vitalia stores at Viktualienmarkt and Laimer Platz. We have also learned from you that the Dümig spelt bakery in Haar offers vegan doughnuts, as does the Tagwerk bakery Glonntaler Backkultur, which supplies Denns at Münchner Freiheit, for example. Our tip to make sure you get vegan doughnuts: call the branches in advance to see if they have any and / or pre-order.
